Generator installation in Evergreen and the foothills.

Backup power wired through a transfer switch or interlock, for the furnace, well pump and fridge when a storm takes the lines down.

When a storm takes the power out in the foothills, a generator keeps the furnace, the well pump and the fridge running. Total Electric installs generators and wires them into the house the safe way.

Transfer switch or interlock

A generator has to be connected through a transfer switch or a panel interlock. Either one makes it impossible for the generator to feed power back onto the utility line, where it can hurt line workers, and keeps the house from being connected to both at once.

Choosing the circuits

A standby generator can carry the whole house or a chosen set of circuits. In the foothills that list usually starts with the furnace, the well pump, the refrigerator and a few lights. The circuits get picked before the equipment is sized.

Portable generators

A portable generator can be connected safely too, through an inlet and an interlock or transfer switch. Plugging one into a dryer outlet with a homemade cord is how back-feeding accidents happen.

How a generator install runs.

Four steps from the list of must-haves to a tested cutover.

  1. 01

    List what matters

Which circuits have to stay on when the power goes out.

  2. 02

    Plan the hookup

Transfer switch or interlock, inlet and wire run.

  3. 03

    Install and wire

Equipment set, transfer gear in, circuits connected.

  4. 04

    Test a cutover

Utility off, generator on, every chosen circuit checked.

Questions about this job.

Straight answers to what people ask most. Anything else, call (303) 670-6561.

01

Can I plug a generator into a dryer outlet?

No. Without a transfer switch or interlock, power can feed back onto the utility line and endanger line workers. A proper inlet and interlock is a small job.

02

What will a generator run?

Whatever circuits you choose and the generator can carry. Most foothills homes start with the furnace, well pump, refrigerator and some lights.

03

Do you install standby and portable hookups?

Yes. Generator installation is on the service list, including the transfer switch or interlock.

04

How long does the install take?

It depends on the generator and where it goes. Call with the model and location and you'll get a straight answer.
